# Messaging

Before you begin

Where needed, you can enable participants of the livestream to chat with each other or ask questions. This section covers the options available.

After determining your sharing and embedding settings, you can enable messaging for your event.

### No messaging

If you disable the messaging, **all** chat interactivity is **disabled**. This means that participants wont see a chat and cannot interact with the moderator or with each other.

### Unmoderated chat

If you enable unmoderated chat, participants' messages become visible to all other attendees. You can also decide if usernames should be displayed with the sent messages.

### Moderated Q&A

If you enable moderated Q&A, participants' messages must be first approved by the moderator before they become visible to all other attendees. You can also decide if usernames should be displayed with the sent messages.

If moderators decline the message, only the moderator and the original poster will see the messages. For more information, consult the [moderation](/v1/docs/moderating-qa) and the [viewer](/v1/docs/livestream-viewer) articles.

### Anonymous & non-anonymous chat

Regardless of whether you opt for an unmoderated or moderated chat, you have the option of configuring the chat as anonymous or non-anonymous.

If you deactivate the ‘Display name with message’ option, the messages will be anonymous for:

- Single Sign-on events

- Email-protected events with a list of participants

- Events where viewers register with their email/name.

For events without registration, participants will always be asked to enter a name before sending a message.
